Inner Tube Wallets

EthicalAsia.com's dedication to sourcing interesting new products has thrown up these inner tube wallets. These wallets are made in Cambodia from recycled motorcycle inner tubes. In a country where the roads are dominated by mopeds and motorbikes discarded inner tubes are easily sourced this is another very creative way of recycling.

The Burmese Way

This is an exert from the April Newsletter which can be viewed in full: Ethical Asia Newsletter.

In the books section of the Ethical Asia website is a publication that very few people in the West will have seen, and would seem to be the least ethical book on the planet. How to Cook and Entertain the Burmese Way is a Burmese recipe book sold at a state-run book shop in Rangoon, the largest city in one of the most repressive countries on the planet – Burma.

But by channelling this obscure publication to new markets and in donating money from its resale to one of the ethnic groups persecuted the most by the Burmese junta – the Karen – we’re trying to rewire the market for products like this in unusual ways that benefit some of the most disadvantaged people in the region, and among the least understood.

In buying this book, 10 percent of the unit profit made will go directly to the Karen Hilltribes Trust in Thailand which aims to look after the needs of the huge refugee populations that have fled east across the border from Karen and Mon states in Burma due to attacks by the military, an internal conflict that has been fought for half a century. This is a problem that is not going away and requires steady streams of funding.

The book itself is a fascinating read given its lengthy explanations on how and what Burmese eat, although some may be dismayed by its treatise on equal rights in Burma...........click the link below to read more:

Sunrise for Cambodian Children - April Newsletter

The following is from EthicalAsia.com's April newsletter and the full Newsletter can be seen here.

FORMERLY working at Chase Manhatten Bank (now JP Morgan) in Sydney, Australian Geraldine Cox performed an abrupt about-face in her career following a visit to Cambodia in 1993 with a friend.
It started with raising money for just one child, garnering donations back home after witnessing the bleak circumstances of some of Cambodia’s most disadvantaged children. By 1998, Geraldine’s orphanage projects had been recognized as a fully fledged non-governmental organization helping to better the lives of dozens more Cambodian kids.

Today Sunrise offers a real chance - and a new family- to children unlucky enough to have found themselves parentless with orphanages in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, a beach resort on the south coast of the country.

Given the enduring poverty in Cambodia, the legacy of war that still blights the country in the form of landmines in particular and the lack of social security in the country, projects like Sunrise are vital.........click the link below to read more:

Cambodian Premier League Football - Phnom Penh's Olympic Stadium

Despite never having hosted a major international sporting event the stadium in Phnom Penh is referred to as the 'Olympic' stadium. It did however host North Korea vs Australia as they competed in a qualifying football match for the 1966 World Cup in England. Phnom Penh was chosen due to North Korea's lack of diplomatic relations with other nations.

Supporting Local Charities in Asia

The aim of http://www.ethicalasia.com/ is to have a positive social and economic impact on Asia whilst running a profitable global business. We therefore support local charities in the region and initially we have specifically chosen two very worthy organisations. As the business grows we hope to be able to support more charitable causes as there are many more in Asia doing fantastic work.

The two charities we have chosen are the Karen Hillside Trust and the Sunshine Children's Village, links to both these charities can be seen from the link section for blog and more information is also available on the Charity Page of http://www.ethicalasia.com/.

Grand Opening

Welcome to the first entry in the Ethical Asia blog; the official blog for http://www.ethicalasia.com/.

We sell a range of interesting and authentic products imported into the UK from all over Asia ranging from wallets and bags made from recycled fish feed sacks to authentic Cambodian Krama scarfs. Our aim is to source our stock at fair prices from the network of local manufacturers and distributers, rather than cutting out the supply chain and putting price pressure on the manufacturers. This way we aim to have an overall positive economic and social impact on the countries where we source products, some of which being some of the poorest countries in the world.

We also donate a proportion of profits to Charitable causes in the region and initially we are supporting two foundations, one in Cambodia and another in Thailand.

Information on our product range:

The majority of our products are sourced directly from local vendors at two markets - in Thailand and Cambodia - that rank among the most creative and vibrant in South East Asia. Phnom Penh's Russian Market sells many of the garments and apparel produced in the country's many factories that Phnom Penh's Russian Market sells many of the garments and apparel produced in the country's factories - many of our Cambodia-made products are sourced from this market. Cambodia is a country in which electricity is both scarce and expensive so we've decided to focus on products that have been recycled. Our main line of products............
